Istanbul MEM Archive

A suitable building for depository has been found. It is located in Asian side of Istanbul and is belong to Validebağ Teacher’s House. The building is 75 m2 and has 3 rooms. 2 of the rooms are currently used to be a storage for old furnitures. The other is used to be Turkish hamam.

Istanbul MEM started to contact partners to find historic building material which is no longer needed in historical monuments and which should be replaced by new material. They collect and document these materials in the new archive. First examples you can find here:

Railings

These railings belong to Adile Sultan Palace which was built as a former royal residence in 1876. Later the building was used as a school building and now it is a culture center located in Kandilli, Istanbul. Due to an electrical short circuit, the building was burnt down in 1986. The building had undergone a restoration process which finished in 2005. These railings were replaced during the restoration process. Therefore railings are collected for building up an archive for ARCHE Project.

They have collected even more material:

4 marble stones from Validebağ Teacher’s House

1 stove from Zapyon Rum Primary School

Door from Validebağ Teacher’s House

Then we realiszed that it isn´t allowed to collect historical material and to bring it out of the old buildings. We had to give back all the material we collected. So we decided to create an online archive.

Online Archive

ISOV Vocational high School was our local partner and all collected materials are within the premises of this school. Online archive will continue to take part on the official web page of ISOV High School. In

online archive, old building materials within the premises of ISOV High School were presented; timber stair railings, bricks, adorned windows

architrav, hanging sash, railing bollard, iron railings, oak pavements,

and wooden windows. Some of those materials were produced in the

early 19th century, whereas some of them belong to 1980s.
